Sections In GRE Test

The GRE is a three and a half hour computer-adaptive exam (CAT) with three sections: a verbal part, a quantitative component, and an analytical writing assessment.

Analytical Writing

  • 2 Sections
  • 60 total minutes                            
  1. The “Issue” essay will take 30 minutes.
  2. 30 minutes for the essay on “Argument”
  • Ability to analyze claims and evidence, support ideas with logical reasoning and relevant examples, and use standard written English to prove an argument are all tested in this exercise.

Quantitative Section

  • 2 Sections 
  • 20 questions each
  • 35 minutes total
  • tests knowledge of fundamental algebraic, geometric, and arithmetic concepts as well as analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Quantitative comparisons, problem-solving, and data interpretation questions.

Verbal Section

  • 2 Sections
  • 20 Questions
  • 30 Minutes Total
  • tests the student’s ability to analyze sentences and writing passages, as well as their comprehension of essential ideas and words used in context.
  • Types of queries: Text completion, sentence equivalence, and reading comprehension.

Who Takes It and Why?

Prospective graduate applicants take the General Test.
